2010 UCLA MATHEMATICS FESTIVAL: FEBRURARY 13, 2010

UCLA Math Curtis Center and IPAM will be hosting the 2010 Mathematics Festival on Feb 13th. The festival will be sponsored by the Center for Talented Youth and Northrup Grumman. The theme this year is "What is Mathematics?" The students will attend a keynote talk by Harvey Mudd's Professor Francis Su and a panel discussion on Careers in Mathematics. Following the keynote talk, there will be three hour-long sessions in which each student will problem solve in groups with professors, international researchers and graduate students, as well as attend talks by professors and high school teachers. 2010 CURTIS CENTER MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING CONFERENCE: MARCH 6, 2010
We enthusiastically invite you to attend the forth-annual UCLA Mathematics Department's Philip C. Curtis Jr. Center for Mathematics and Teaching Conference on March 6, 2010! The conference is composed of a keynote talk and breakout sessions in three areas: Mathematics for Mathematics Teachers, Strategies for the Effective Instruction of Mathematics, and Mathematics Education Research and/or Recommendations. The keynote talk will be given by Dana Center's Uri Treisman. In addition, an outstanding group of speakers have agreed to present in the breakout sessions. We believe the day will be thought provoking and worthwhile for mathematics teachers, mathematics teacher leaders, mathematics education researchers, and mathematicians alike and hope to see you there!

2010 MATHEMATICS INSTITUTE FOR YOUNG SCHOLARS: JUNE 28 - JULY 30, 2010

The Curtis Center is pleased to offer the UCLA Mathematics Institute for Young Scholars in Summer 2010. The institute will be a five-week, day program for middle and high school students interested in mathematics under the direction of mathematical physicist Professor Lincoln Chayes. The Institute will consist of courses on topics outside the usual school curriculum. This year's courses will include probability and other topics to be announced. Students will attend course lectures taught by UCLA mathematics faculty, course problem solving sessions led by UCLA graduate students, and plenary seminars on a variety of topics. Students will also participate in a number of special outings, including a visit with undergraduate and industry researchers from around the world at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics' Research in Industrial Projects for Students. The Program will be held on June 28 through July 30, 2010 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The cost is $2250. Institute participants will earn college credit for and a letter grade in the college level course, Probability Theory. Online application process will begin shortly.
