Conference:
March 15th, 2008.
Pre-conference: March 13th-14th
At our second annual UCLA Mathematics
Department Mathematics and Teaching Conference, we celebrate
Professor Emeritus Philip C. Curtis’ 80th birthday and inaugurate
our new Curtis Center. Professor Curtis significantly shaped
the department’s involvement in mathematical activity at
the pre-collegiate level and played a singular role in the
establishment of most of the department’s current mathematics
education programs. The conference begins with two days of
mathematics talks given by colleagues of Professor Curtis.
These talks will focus on his research area of Banach algebras
and reflect on his contributions. The conference continues
with a day of mathematics education talks broken into three
strands: Mathematics for Mathematics Teachers, Instructional
Strategies for the Mathematics Classroom, and Mathematics
Education Research and Recommendations. An outstanding group
of speakers have agreed to present at this year’s conference,
and we believe it will be thought provoking and worthwhile
for mathematics teachers, mathematics teacher leaders, mathematics
education researchers, and mathematicians alike.
Keynote Talk by Zalman Usiskin:
“The Current State of Middle School and High School Mathematics
in our Nation”
This year, we are proud to present Professor
Zalman Usiskin as our keynote speaker at the Saturday luncheon
banquet! Zalman Usiskin is a professor of education at
the University of Chicago, where he has been a faculty
member since 1969. Since 1987 he has also been overall
director of the University of Chicago School Mathematics
Project. His research has focused on the teaching and learning
of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. He is the author
or co-author of over 150 articles and other papers on mathematics
and mathematics education, as well as dozens of books and
textbooks. In developing these textbooks, he has taught
mathematics in nine different secondary schools. He has
served terms on the Mathematical Sciences Education Board
of the National Research Council, the Board of Directors
of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the
steering and test development committees for mathematics
of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and
the steering committee for the Preparing Mathematicians
to Educate Teachers (PMET) program of the Mathematical
Association of America. He is well-known for his talks.
In 1987 and again in 1999 he was the banquet speaker at
the annual meetings of the NCTM, with a mathematical presentation
filled with songs sung while he accompanied himself at
the piano.
