UCLA California Teach
Current Undergraduate Preparation of Mathematics Teachers
The UCLA Mathematics Department currently offers undergraduates who are interested in teaching secondary mathematics the following opportunities (for more information, see Departmental Handbook):

Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP)
UCLA is one of three UCs which offer undergraduates the opportunity to earn Subject Matter Competence toward the CA Single Subject Credential in mathematics through the completion of a sequence of mathematics and mathematics education coursework.

Joint Mathematics Education Program (JMEP)
The Joint Math/Ed Program is a collaborative effort of the UCLA Mathematics Department and the Graduate School of Education’s Teacher Education Program. In this program, students begin work toward a California Preliminary Single Subject (Mathematics) Teaching Credential and a Master of Education degree during their senior year, and complete this coursework by the end of the academic year immediately following completion of their bachelor’s degree. The program enables students to earn a full time salary (about $40,000) while teaching full time in Los Angeles urban schools during the academic year immediately following their bachelor’s degree.

Wilson Scholars Program
The Wilson Scholars Program offers financial assistance to students enrolled in the Joint Mathematics Education Program.

California Teach
The California Teach program offers students the opportunity to explore secondary mathematics teaching as a career through seminar courses and early field experiences.
Students are provided a scholarship for their participation in the program.

  Bruin MATHteach
The UCLA Mathematics Department is currently planning to coordinate and expand its existing undergraduate secondary mathematics teacher preparation programs into Bruin MATHteach, a top mathematics research department’s coordinated, comprehensive effort to train high quality undergraduate mathematics teachers. Bruin MATHteach will integrate the Department’s coursework for future mathematics teachers, increase student enrollments by offering early completion of credential program coursework, and increase the readiness of these students for acceptance into CA credentialing programs.

Bruin MATHteach will aim to annually graduate 40 high quality, CA credential program-ready mathematics teacher candidates who either go on to complete their credential coursework in the UCLA Teacher Education Program or enroll in another credential program. Bruin MATHteach provides students with:

  • A four-year sequence of specialized mathematics education courses within the UCLA Mathematics Department which include early field experiences
  • Preparation for acceptance to local credential programs
  • Early completion of local credential program coursework
  • Esprit de corp and networking opportunities
